"THOSE LITTLE DISTRACTIONS"
By Neil Hodgson

I was filming a wedding at The Old Mill in Aldermaston. This is a lovely venue with gardens surrounded on 3 sides by a millstream. Such a site is too good to ignore as a fishing venue and anglers regularly sit around the garden edge seeking that elusive catch. It was here that the British record Barbel was caught so the area has a reputation on which to attract the sportsmen.

During the afternoon the stills photographer, Bruce, and I took the bride, groom, best man and bridesmaids to one end of the garden to shoot some group pictures. The 3 young ushers joined us. Bruce suggested a "fun shot for the guys" and proceeded to set up a series of relaxed poses. After several shots he dismissed the men and took the girls off to one side. "Can we have a fun shot too?" they cried. Bruce was searching for an idea for them; not quite knowing the direction this might go. But before he could reply they all shouted "GARTERS!" and proceeded to lift each other's dresses up their legs to reveal the resplendent garters.

Standing a little way back I looked over towards the anglers as this was going on. On the shout of "GARTERS!" those close enough all turned and leant back to look down the bank to where we were standing. Not much concentration on fish bites took place for a minute or two and I swear one angler, close to the "action" took twenty minutes to bait one hook!
