MEMBERS FILM CHURCH SERVICE

Father Keith Kinnard, Vicar of St. Andrews Church recently attended a service, which was held in part to honour the 25 years since his ordination. The Bishop of Oxford was just one of the very important guests who attended the service. Father Keith asked the RFVM if we could record the event and club members were invited to use their camera skills.

On the day John Montague took charge of the outside 'broadcast' arrangements, Neil Hodgson the overall coverage and editing, and Laurie Joyce nipped around the place discreetly poking a camera out from side doors and the like to get those candid close up shots.

Of course this is not the first time we have filmed a service in the church so we had some experience to call on with regards to the positioning of cameras etc. The last time it was a bit of a struggle to obtain suitable positions to film because the previous Vicar appeared to have a dislike of cameras in churches. A view apparently shared by some of the lay clergy as well. However Father Keith could not have been more helpful, and it was noticeable that this time church members too were very supportive in helping us film the event. The finished film has been handed to Father Keith who said he was delighted with it. In addition he has also very generously given a cheque for Club funds.

As you may know the church is intending to spend large sums to update the church halls in order to meet regulations and to provide really good facilities for the community. This will cost a considerable amount of money. In due time this will mean that our little hall will be replaced by a new one although that is a few years away yet. In order to raise the money needed hall rental fees have had to be increased and this is the reason why our subs will have to go up, although not as much as we first feared.

To help the church raise money we have offered to put on an evenings film entertainment for a ticket only event with refreshments (by the church) later this season. We are fortunate in being able to use such a convenient hall with such good parking facilities and we are consequently pleased to help in any way we can.

Just a final thought on the subject of covering events such as the church service. You will have read from Mark Stephenson's article in this magazine about going out on jobs is the very best way to learn. Of course we all have busy lives, but it is a little disappointing that it tends to be the same old faces who volunteer to help.

This may of course be down to lack of confidence. The only way to get confidence is to go out and do it. The beauty of going on a club sponsors events is that you are not alone. You will have others with you who can help show you the ropes and help build up that confidence. So when the Chairman asks for volunteers don't be shy - have ago!!!
