CHAIRMAN'S CHAT

Well, here we are almost at the end of another season and also the end of my term as chairman of the club. I am hoping (somewhat optimistically!) that all this spare time that I will now have will enable me to spend more time making videos, but we shall have to see!

Coupled with every farewell there must always be a welcome and I am particularly pleased to be able to welcome my successor Neil Hodgson into the "hot seat". I am very confident that I am leaving the chair in safe hands and I am sure that we shall all benefit from Neil's experience and new ideas.

We also have one other retirement which I should like to comment on, since it is far more notable than my own - Bernard Bareham is stepping down from the committee after serving almost forty years, many of those as treasurer. He will of course continue to be an active member of the club but we shall of course sorely miss his contribution and experience on our committee and on behalf of all members I am sure you would want to join me in wishing him a very big thank you. He did of course hand over the financial reins to Calum Macfadyan last year, and it is comforting to report that we remain financially strong (despite the impending hike in hall charges which we shall have to debate at our Annual General Meeting).

Happily the majority of the rest of your committee have agreed to continue to serve and hopefully at our upcoming Annual General Meeting we will be able to persuade a couple of newcomers to volunteer to make up our number.

I have certainly enjoyed my time as programme secretary, vice-chairman and most recently as chairman, and have agreed to stay on the committee for the coming year and as one of my duties to continue to maintain and develop our web-site which apart from this magazine, is a most useful contact with the outside world.

I hope you all find plenty of opportunity to get out and about during the summer, capturing plenty of footage which I look forward to seeing in one of next year's competitions. I was talking to Don Currie recently returned from his most recent cruise and he said that he had over 40 reels of film to be developed - I guess he will not only need time to put all that together, but also time to take out a second mortgage to pay for all the developing - we may complain about our video equipment being expensive, but at least we can re-use our tapes!

And finally, I am sure you will all be relieved to know that in the new season I will be more than willing to be added to the tea rota! Thanks for all your support over the last three years, please continue to support your excellent new chairman, since without that he cannot succeed.
