SKITTLES EVENING - Bernard BarehamThere is an unwritten proverb that applies
to all treasurers, Quote:- "A cheque in the hand is worth many
a good intention," or to be more specific, when money has been
paid it firms up a good intention that would otherwise probably be forgotten.
Having paid thc required deposit to the 'Gardiners Arms" we were therefore committed to ensure that a minimum of 20 people would come along to play skittles, or pay the difference out of club funds. Just a few days before we were still 7 short However, a phone call to those I had not heard from quickly changed the situation and made the number up to 22. Those of us who had been previously were pleasantly suprised to find that the alley had been refurbished. The floor of the alley had been sanded and polished, and the sides are now lined with padded carpet Not only that there were new balls which were actually 'ROUND' Everyone seemed well pleased with the meals, of which there was a much increased choice this time, It was also good to see that several of our members had brought along friends to enjoy the evening. John Montague came along with his next door neighbour, Wilf Gardiner and luck certainly came with them. Wilf won the bottle of whisky [for which we rolled our pound coins] plus a bottle of wine. John won the 'second' cash prize in the knock out competition. So a very enjoyable time was had by all - especially
